Panasonic has announced 8GB and 16GB SDHC cards that are promised to deliver 60MB/s read speeds (no specific write speed data has been given). The new memory cards utilize the faster UHS-I bus interface in achieving quicker throughput. As of this writing, no shipping or announced Canon or Nikon digital SLR supports UHS-I. This means Panasonic's new cards will operate within a bus interface maximum of 25MB/s in today's SD slot-equipped cameras from each manufacturer.

Canon Expo 2010 New York, a showcase for Canon products and emerging Canon technology, kicked off today in The Big Apple. Held every five years, the event travels from here to Paris, Tokyo and, for the first time, Shanghai. Among the items of interest to photographers are the new EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye and other recently-announced lenses, the EOS 60D, the barcode-reading EOS 7D solution and an elaborate remote camera management demonstration that, if commercialized, would streamline the setup of potentially thousands of Canon digital SLRs deployed at locations across the country. Adobe has released Photoshop Lightroom 3.2 and Camera Raw 6.2. The new versions, which were initially made available as release candidates earlier this month, extend RAW conversion support to 16 new camera models including the Canon EOS 60D and Sony Alpha NEX-5. Lens correction profiles have been improved, while 120 new profiles have been added. In addition, Lightroom 3.2 includes a number of bug fixes, plus photos can now be uploaded direct to Facebook and SmugMug from within the application.

Canon announces EOS 60D with vari-angle rear LCD

Canon has unveiled the EOS 60D. The successor to the EOS 50D fits in between the EOS T2i/550D and EOS 7D in Canon's lineup and gets many of its still and video features from these models. It has a 17.92 million image pixel CMOS sensor, shoots stills at up to 5.3fps, sports 63-zone metering and 9-point AF systems, can control and trigger remote Speedlites with its built-in flash and captures 1080p video at up to 30fps. It's also the first Canon digital SLR to incorporate a tilt-and-twist rear LCD.

The diminutive Zoom H1 digital audio recorder is now shipping. Despite its small size it incorporates many of the features of the popular (and larger) H4N, ones that should make it suitable for capturing sound alongside digital SLR video. These features include built-in stereo mics, an external 3.5mm mic jack, recording in either WAV or MP3 format at up to 24-bit/96kHz and a 3.5mm headphone jack for both monitoring and playback.

Nikon has officially unveiled the D3100, an entry-level digital SLR that's the first from Nikon to capture video at 1080p resolution, as well as the first from any digital SLR maker to offer continuous autofocus operation while video is being recorded. The camera is built around a 14.2MP DX-size CMOS sensor and has an 11-point AF system, 3fps burst rate, ISO range of 100-3200 (plus 6400 and 12,800) and new EXPEED 2 image processing.

This means it will arrive "in retail stores in many markets within a couple weeks," says an LPA Design statement. Lethbridge (Canada) Herald staff photographer Ian Martens thought the most memorable part of his workday last Friday would be a tandem jump with the Canadian Forces Skyhawks skydiving team. While returning to his car after the jump, and still shaky from the adrenaline rush, he paused to train his Nikon D300 on a CF-18 Hornet fighter jet being put through a slow, low-altitude pass over the Lethbridge airport in preparation for the weekend's Alberta International AirShow. A California woman claims that her "Uncle Earl" is likely the photographer who shot the two boxes of glass negatives recently announced as being the early work of Ansel Adams. She produces as convincing evidence a photo shot by her uncle, Earl Brooks, that is eerily similar to one of the found glass negatives.

Two boxes of glass negatives bought at a garage sale for US$45 have been authenticated as early photographs taken by landscape photographer Ansel Adams. The 65 negatives, believed to have been exposed between 1919 and the early 1930s, were recently appraised at up to US$200 million, based on the sales that could be generated from selling original prints and, presumably, the intrinsic value of the negatives themselves.

A pair of Sony Alpha DSLR-A900 cameras were used to shoot what is claimed to be the world's highest resolution multi-image photograph to date, a 71 gigapixel, 360 degree panorama of Budapest. The project, sponsored by Sony, Microsoft and Epson was shot about two months ago from the city's Elisabeth Tower. The result is an extremely detailed if somewhat hazy look at the Hungarian capital.

Oil giant BP, under fire in recent days for its extensive Photoshopping of certain images related to the company's oil spill response efforts, has posted to Flickr the original and manipulated versions of three photos, two of which include significant changing or removing of detail. The Flickr gallery includes a note from BP saying "we've instructed the photographer who created the images to refrain from cutting-and-pasting in the future and to adhere to standard photo journalistic best practices."

Canon has posted for download firmware v1.2.2 for the EOS 7D. The release fixes three bugs, including one in which the aperture would change while focusing during movie capture. Misspellings in the Spanish and Thai menus have also been corrected.

A Reuters story says that Canon is developing an SLR-style digital camera that is smaller than existing offerings and is meant to compete with mirrorless models from Sony, Olympus and Panasonic. In the July 20, 2010 article, Masaya Maeda, head of Image Communication Products at Canon in Japan, wouldn't say if the camera would also be mirrorless, only that "[t]here is a consumer need for good-quality cameras to be made smaller" and that his company "will meet that need."

Nikon USA's stance on a possible distance panel light leak affecting the AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED is that it's "not a problem with normal shooting." The company also says that any U.S. owner of the lens may request to have it inspected and "if deemed necessary Nikon will take the appropriate steps to address the issue." These are the highlights of a statement given in response to questions we posed to Nikon USA last week about the matter, which has been a hot topic on photography forums lately and which prompted several readers to ask for more information.
