A Cardboard Digital Camera?
Mon, 30 Apr 2012 02:31:00
IKEA, a pioneer in do-it-yourself, inexpensive, flat-box furniture, has taken that ethos into a new direction: a cardboard digital camera.
The camera is literally a cardboard box that's held together with two plastic screws. It's fueled by two AA batteries and has a pop-out USB connector for downloading images. The viewfinder? A hole in the cardboard.

The Demise and Rise of Polaroid Film
Mon, 09 Apr 2012 01:33:00
Back in August, in a Best of the Blogs" column, I wrote about a video that showed Polaroid film being made". What I didn't say was the back-story to the 5-minute documentary, one that is as fascinating as the video itself.
Hands-on: The Lytro "Shoot-Now, Focus-Later" Camera
Wed, 28 Mar 2012 01:54:00
A new camera has been in the news recently: the Lytro, a $399 camera that allows you to take a photo now, and focus — or refocus — later. Sounds provocative. But does it work? Is this something you should add to your camera bag? I've had the opportunity to use one for several weeks now, and I'm pretty gung-ho. Here's why.
Wow-worthy Canon EOS 5D Mark III Introduced
Mon, 05 Mar 2012 10:00:00
The rumbling in digital photography swelled to a roar last week when Canon U.S.A. announced the EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR Camera, the newest in a line of cameras that first appeared 25 years ago. Its predecessor the 5D Mark II was already considered a "game-changer" by many photographers, so anticipation has been building for the 5D Mark III.
Kodak Tosses Digital Cameras in the Dustbin
Fri, 10 Feb 2012 02:10:36
It's official: First they took our Kodachrome away, now Kodak is doing away with its digital cameras, too. The company, which filed for bankruptcy protection in January, has decided "to phase out its dedicated capture devices business — comprising digital cameras, pocket video cameras and digital picture frames — in the first half of 2012." Kodak plans to focus on online and retail-kiosk image processing as well as inkjet printers.
Olympus Releases Another Micro Four-Thirds with Retro Look
Thu, 09 Feb 2012 02:22:30
The first model in a new line of cameras from Olympus has been announced. The Olympus OM-D E-M5 is a Micro Four Thirds (MFT) system digital camera, meaning that it accepts interchangeable lenses that are compatible with the MFT system. Because MFT cameras don't use mirrors, they can be smaller than traditional SLRs.
The $1,299 E-M5 comes with a 12-50mm f3.5-6.3 lens and shoots both stills and HD video. Its sensor captures 16MP of data, and its ISO range extends up to 25600.
Three New Sony Cyber-shot Digital Cameras
Tue, 31 Jan 2012 02:41:30
Sony has announced three new models in its Cyber-shot line of point-and-shoot. The most impressive is the $500 DSC-TX200V, which captures stills and HD video with an 18.2MP sensor. It can focus in as few as 0.13 seconds when you're shooting in daylight; when the light's low, it still needs only 0.25 seconds to focus.
The TX200V is waterproof, freeze-proof, and dust-proof, yet it's not housed in a hulking case. Instead, it looks more like a sleek new iPhone:

The Nikon D4 Is Your New Dream Camera
Mon, 09 Jan 2012 02:23:23
Nikon has announced the D4 digital SLR, a camera that's causing quite a stir despite relatively moderate changes to its still-photo features. Perhaps one reason for the buzz is the fact that the previous model, the D3S, was announced way back in the fall of 2009. Since then, the biggest shift in the photo community has been the rise in importance and popularity of video shot with SLR cameras. The D4 addresses this with significant improvements to its video capabilities.
Three New Fujifilm Cameras All Shoot Raw
Fri, 06 Jan 2012 02:05:52
Fujifilm just announced a slew of new cameras — 19, to be precise — but only three of those can shoot in Raw. And if you want to get the best out of your photos, Raw is infinitely superior to JPG. Open a Raw image in Lightroom, Aperture, Photoshop, or your image editor of your choice, and you can make a lot of improvements without losing any data. It certainly has saved some of my pictures from the trash.
Consumer Digicam Builds In Wi-Fi
Tue, 03 Jan 2012 02:16:10
Back in the day, we were excited when the cameras in our mobile phones added features that were comparable to those in standalone cameras. Now the trend seems to have reversed. Samsung's new DualView DV300F has built-in wireless connectivity so you can quickly and easily upload its photos and videos to Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, and Picasa. You can also wirelessly transfer files from the camera to a PC and to various cloud services.
New Compact Camera from Leica
Mon, 12 Dec 2011 02:28:19
The new Leica V-Lux 3 is a digital camera with a versatility that belies its compact size. The 24x zoom lens is capable of focal lengths equivalent to 25–600 mm in 35 mm format. The newly developed 12.1-megapixel CMOS image sensor also promises to deliver high image quality. You can capture stills as fast as 12 frames per second at full resolution, or 60 frames per second at medium resolution. In addition to photos, you can shoot HD video at 1920 × 1080 pixels and 60 fps.
DIY Tilt-Shift Photography
Mon, 21 Sep 2009 02:23:02
Have you ever wondered how to get an effect like this?

You could buy a special tilt-shift lens -- if you have a thousand bucks to spare. Or you could get a rubber plunger, some glue, and a few bits and pieces and create your own flexible lens.
Trip the iPhone's Camera Remotely
Mon, 05 Dec 2011 02:44:12
With the holidays come a wealth of photo opportunities. Some may be formal family portraits you shoot with your SLR, but many others will be candids you capture with a mobile phone.
If you have an iPhone with iOS 5, you can improve those snapshots by using a cable release to trip the shutter, thereby cutting down on camera shake. Does it sound crazy to buy and carry around a cable release for a cell phone? You don't have to — it already exists in the headset Apple includes with every iPhone.
