Free For All: Infographic Freebies
Mon, 30 Apr 2012 02:25:00
Infographics are all the rage. If you don't know the term, it refers to a type of information presentation that uses symbols, text, and rich design to communicate concepts, ideas, and statistics in a highly engaging way. In other words, it's the result of a client handing a designer a spreadsheet full of data and saying, "make this interesting and easy to understand for real people." Ah, if only all client projects were like that…

Once again, with Creative Suite 6 the Photoshop team has surpassed itself. Photoshop CS6 is a serious release that brings specialized improvements targeted at specific types of users: painters will like the new Airbrush tips that project ink and the Erodible Brushes; photographers will be pleased with the new tool for correcting wide-angle images; and, in the Extended version, engineers and scientists will appreciate the revamped 3D tools.

In fact, this is one of the main themes of CS6 and the CreativeCloud. So if you’re the person being asked to produce content that fits anything from a billboard to a smartphone (and everything in between) this one’s for you. Excerpted from Photoshop CS6 Beta Preview on lynda.com.
The most obvious change to Adobe Photoshop CS6 is its darkened interface. If you work in Lightroom, then you are already familiar with a dark gray workspace. If not, this Lynda.com video by Deke McClelland is a good introduction.
The State of E-book Typography
Wed, 04 Apr 2012 02:45:00
If you look at the size of the type most people choose for their Kindle, iPad, or any other device used for reading e-books, you’ll see that it tends to resemble that in books for people with vision problems. Logical enough, because when you’re reading an e-book — especially on a computer monitor — you do indeed have vision problems, compounded by poorly set type.
Case Study: Designing a New Logo
Mon, 02 Apr 2012 01:58:00
Developing a new logo for an established brand is always a tricky thing. You want to present a fresh to the prospective clients without alienating or confusing your current customers. Extensis, the company that produces the font-management application Suitcase Fusion, recently decided to replace its dated logo with one that's more in step with what its customers have come to expect from the company — creative thinking, type expertise, and technical know-how.
Hands-on: The Lytro "Shoot-Now, Focus-Later" Camera
Wed, 28 Mar 2012 01:54:00
A new camera has been in the news recently: the Lytro, a $399 camera that allows you to take a photo now, and focus — or refocus — later. Sounds provocative. But does it work? Is this something you should add to your camera bag? I've had the opportunity to use one for several weeks now, and I'm pretty gung-ho. Here's why.

Cupcake Ipsum
No one in our business doesn’t know — and isn’t at least mildly bored with — the placeholder text Lorem Ipsum. The design helper is ideally suited for its purpose of substituting for live text yet is so nonsensical that it forces clients to focus on how the text is formatted rather than on what the text actually says. Still, it’s so boring!

The Best App for Managing Digital Assets
Wed, 08 Feb 2012 02:43:14
Photoshop is an excellent tool for many things, but it's no digital asset manager. The most successful workflows require Photoshop plus something else: Lightroom or Bridge. Which one is best for you depends on a lot of things.
In choosing between the two programs, you'll need to answer these questions:
• Are you new to photography?
• Are you a small studio or a large studio?
• Are you a high-volume shooter?
• Are you a designer, photographer, or both?
• Are you comfortable with computers?
Then you'll want to consider the advantages of each app.
