Fonts on Friday: Crafty Handmade Fonts
Fri, 11 May 2012 11:01:28
What better time to round up new typefaces than on Friday. Not only is "Fonts on Friday" alliterative, but showcasing new fonts also seems like a good way to end the week.
While I love classic and tasteful text typefaces with famous names attached to them like Garamond or Caslon, I also enjoy seeing display fonts that push the boundaries of taste, or at least usefulness.

Fonts on Friday: Three indie typefaces to add to your collection
Fri, 23 Mar 2012 03:26:01
What better time to round up new typefaces than on Friday. Not only is "Fonts on Friday" alliterative, but showcasing new fonts also seems like a good way to end the week as well.
Here are three typefaces that caught our eye in the past week:

Type How-To: A River Runs Through It
Wed, 02 May 2012 01:56:00
The principal goal of typography is to create text that’s easy and pleasant to read.
That sounds simple, but it’s a tall order; reading is complex task, and stumbling blocks to concentration and comprehension abound. This column looks at one of what could be characterized as distractions: eye-catching typographic events that momentarily draw the reader’s attention away from the text and toward the form of the text itself.
Font Bureau's Readability Series Goes Retail
Thu, 26 Apr 2012 10:52:10
The Font Bureau announced that it's much coveted Readability Series of typefaces will be joining its retail collection.
Previously, the fonts in the Readbility Series were sold exclusively to select Font Bureau customers like Sports Illustrated, the Poynter Institute, and the Boston Globe, among many others.
The Readability Series was created with changing technologies in mind. The Font Bureau's clients needed fonts that adapted to new trends and methods for printing on paper.
Don Quixote, Wilco, Illustrator, Veer — and You
Wed, 25 Apr 2012 02:31:00
You don't have to be a fan of the band Wilco to enter Veer's new design contest, although it helps. But if you like the novel Don Quixote, and if you like to support creative writing programs for kids, then this contest is for you. (It helps some, too, if you use Illustrator.)
Fonts on Friday: Food Fonts

What better time to round up new typefaces than on Friday. Not only is "Fonts on Friday" alliterative, but showcasing new fonts also seems like a good way to end the week.
Looking around for fonts to feature this week, I came across the
Pancake Font" by Dutch foundry DTM.

TypeTalk: Copy Editing and Proofreading
Wed, 18 Apr 2012 03:05:23
Q. What is the difference between proofreading and copy editing?
A. Any copy that is to be published, whether it be for print, the web, or even your own blog, should be carefully reviewed beforehand. Copy editing and proofreading refer to two distinctive kinds of review that are commonly confused or misunderstood. While there is some overlap between them, it's useful to understand the differences in order to know what to do and when.
Here's the scoop.

The State of E-book Typography
Wed, 04 Apr 2012 02:45:00
If you look at the size of the type most people choose for their Kindle, iPad, or any other device used for reading e-books, you’ll see that it tends to resemble that in books for people with vision problems. Logical enough, because when you’re reading an e-book — especially on a computer monitor — you do indeed have vision problems, compounded by poorly set type.
Fonts on Friday: Nothing Fancy
Fri, 13 Apr 2012 01:54:00
What better time to round up new typefaces than on Friday. Not only is "Fonts on Friday" alliterative, but showcasing new fonts also seems like a good way to end the week.
I'm in a plain-speaking, no-frills mood today, so I've chosen sans-serif fonts with those same characteristics. That's not to say that Regular and Prosto aren't beautiful fonts — they most certainly are — but they're genuine enough to become your go-to typefaces.

InDesign Font Plug-in Lets You Try Before You Buy
Thu, 12 Apr 2012 02:26:00
An InDesign plug-in that lets designers preview and buy fonts from within a layout is in beta testing and available for download. Called FontGazer, the plug-in connects directly to Fonts.com which gives you access to more than 150,000 fonts.
The way it works is quite simple. Install the FontGazer plug-in in your InDesign CS5 or CS5.5 plug-in folder. Open InDesign and create a text frame. Enter the text that you'd like to experiment with. Now open Fontgazer (Window > Fontgazer).
The "Original" Helvetica
Tue, 03 Apr 2012 01:42:00
What we know as Helvetica is not really Helvetica. The font that was Helvetica before it was "Helvetica" is Neue Haas Grotesk, a revival released by the Font Bureau this week.
Case Study: Designing a New Logo
Mon, 02 Apr 2012 01:58:00
Developing a new logo for an established brand is always a tricky thing. You want to present a fresh to the prospective clients without alienating or confusing your current customers. Extensis, the company that produces the font-management application Suitcase Fusion, recently decided to replace its dated logo with one that's more in step with what its customers have come to expect from the company — creative thinking, type expertise, and technical know-how.
Scanning Around With Gene: How Does Your Garden Grow?
Fri, 30 Mar 2012 02:58:43
I’ve never been all that much of a gardener, though I’ve spent my fair share of time toiling in the dirt. I can explain the difference between a perennial and an annual, and I know my petunias from my pansies.
Of all the gardening activities, the most gratifying by far is growing something from seed. The idea of a full-grown plant, let alone something like a watermelon, coming from a tiny seed is a wonder of nature I’ll never quite get over. A little soil and some water and next thing you know you’ve got a giant squash on your hands, or a towering tree.
A Font "Dating" Game
Tue, 27 Mar 2012 01:22:00
They say that opposites attract, but then again, similar values and shared histories often lead to the best matches. Those axioms have held true for people, and what's true for people is also true for typefaces.
Fonts on Friday: Three Indie Typefaces to Add to Your Collection
Fri, 23 Mar 2012 03:26:01
What designer isn't looking for new typefaces? Using a new font is one way to stand out from the crowd — as long as it's a good typeface. Today there are a gazillion (perhaps I'm exaggerating) typefaces a designer can choose from. Contrast that to Gene Gable's article today in which a typographer from the 1940s laments that 10,000 typefaces is too many.
