Adobe Will Fix Security Holes in CS5.5 Apps
Mon, 14 May 2012 02:50:00
Adobe found itself in hot water last week when it announced its plan to help users overcome a security flaw in key Creative Suite 5.5 applications. The solution? Upgrade to CS6.
The applications affected — Flash Professional, Illustrator, and Photoshop — have security holes that let hackers take control of your system after you open a malicious file, for example, a .TIF file in Photoshop. Versions 5.5 and earlier on both Mac and Windows are vulnerable.

Wed, 25 Apr 2012 02:31:00
You don't have to be a fan of the band Wilco to enter Veer's new design contest, although it helps. But if you like the novel Don Quixote, and if you like to support creative writing programs for kids, then this contest is for you. (It helps some, too, if you use Illustrator.)

"The History of Graphic Design" Comes to iPad
Mon, 19 Mar 2012 03:57:28
The definitive textbook for the study of graphic design has long been The History of Graphic Design by the late Philip B. Meggs. First published in 1983, the book was "the first time the words 'History' and 'Graphic Design' were used together in a book title," wrote Steven Heller, perhaps America's most prolific chronicler of design.
Scanning Around With Gene: The Old Way of Photo Retouching
Fri, 16 Mar 2012 02:59:10
I’ve never been much of an artist, though I did, early in my career, have several opportunities to do some basic black and white photo retouching — mostly taking out a background, fixing a flaw or trying to tone down glare from reflected light. These tasks were done back then not on the computer, but with a set of special photo-retouch paints and a variety of fine brushes. Sometimes in a pinch we’d use a black Sharpie or a soft pencil. In those days you did whatever was necessary to achieve your final result, regardless of how bad it looked on the original.

Pros: Great selection and compositing tools; very good retouching tools.
Cons: Missing some simple, critical features. Interface needs polish. Limits to file size. All original metadata gets stripped out.
Rating: 7/10
